PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The City College Surgical Technology program prepares students for a career that is both academically challenging and professionally rewarding in as little as 6 quarters. The integration of lecture, “real-life” patient simulation and 720 hours of clinical experience gives our students everything they need to work confidently side by side with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other surgical staff. 

The program is offered on a  day or evening schedule where students will learn essential support before, during and after surgeries. The City College Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program is programmatically accredited by ABHES and is designed to prepare students to apply to sit for the CST Exam, as well as provide them with the training and skills necessary to be a vital members of life-saving teams.

Associate of science in surgical technology

A surgical technologist provides essential support before, during and after surgeries. Fundamental duties include; preparing and sterilizing all surgical instruments, organizing surgical instruments according to the surgeon’s preferences, collecting used instruments, preparing the operating room for surgery, post-op bandaging and monitoring patient vital signs. The City College Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program is designed to provide students with the training and skills to play a crucial role in the intense environment of the OR. 

The Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program from City College prepares students with all the vital knowledge and tools to apply to sit for the Certified Surgical Technology exam (CST) issued by the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting). Post graduation and certification, graduates can seek employment at hospital surgical suites, outpatient surgery centers, physician’s offices, specialty surgery centers as well as other specialized surgical employers.

Like many careers in the medical field, jobs for surgical technologists are growing at a faster than average rate and are predicted to increase as much as 10% by 2031**. The OR is always going to be full of unexpected challenges and Surgical Technologists are not just passing the scalpel; they are literally holding the tools that could save a life.
