Guests will also be expected to maintain decorum commensurate with this type of event. In light of the formality of commencement, all graduates should be prepared to cooperate with the College’s policy on appropriate attire, as outlined below:

  • Graduates must be attired in full academic regalia to participate in the ceremony. Military dress uniform may be worn in lieu of academic regalia.
  • Gowns should be ironed and zipped closed.
  • The cap tassel should be worn on the front right.
  • Women should wear dark dresses, skirts, or slacks and a white collared blouse with dark dress shoes.
  • Men should wear a dress shirt and tie, dark trousers, dark socks and dark dress shoes.
  • Cell phones should be turned to silent or vibrate.
  • Candidates may not carry any personal items in the processional, including cell phones, video cameras and other electronic devices. Security will not be provided for these items if left unattended.
  • No sunglasses or chewing gum.
  • No air horns, balloons, bubbles, beach balls or similar items are allowed.
  • Any excessive decorations on gowns or caps are distracting and therefore inappropriate.
  • Only City College approved stoles and cords may be worn with the cap and gown. Academic Pins may be worn on your gown. No other accessories or adornments are permitted.
  • Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in and around the venue. Food and drinks of any kind are not allowed in the venue.
