Looking for an interesting career in the health care field?
City College’s Associate of Science in Surgical Technology prepares students for entry-level positions in the exciting world of the surgical team!
Surgical technologists assist in surgeries under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. They are vital members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists and circulating nurses.
Surgical technologists are vital members of operating room teams.
Surgical technologists, or techs, perform crucial tasks at every stage of the surgical process. Before surgery, they prepare the instruments and supplies — surgical techs can identify countless different instruments — and arrange everything according to the needs of the surgeon and the particular procedure.
During the procedure, techs must be able to keep a cool head while handing the surgeon instruments and supplies. After surgery, the tech may help bandage the patient and remove him or her from the operating room. Surgical techs then help collect the used instruments and prepare the operating room for the next surgery.
Surgical techs are directly involved with the welfare of the patient, which is why so many techs view it as an extremely rewarding job. However, as you can imagine, to be a successful surgical tech you need the best training possible.
