After graduating from high school the next step is deciding what to do with your life for a career.

If you have an interest in surgery and the medical field, you may want to consider enrolling in a surgical technology program so you can learn how to become a Surgical Technologist.

A Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the surgeon and his team during operations. They carry out tasks including:

  • Preparing the room for surgery, sterilizing and gathering the necessary equipment for surgery
  • Preparing the patient for the actual procedure
  • As a Surgical Technologist teamwork is essential

The work environment for a Surgical Technologist is mostly located in medical and surgical hospitals. These can be local, private or state owned and operated. A smaller number work in outpatient centers or in the offices of dentists or physicians. While, most Surgical Technologist work standard shifts, emergencies may require working overtime or putting hours in during the evening, weekends and on major holidays.

Other qualities that are beneficial to have if you choose to pursue this career path include a close attention to detail, dexterity to hand instruments to the surgical team quickly, stamina to be on your feet for hours at a time, and the ability to handle stressful situations.

A Surgical Technologist will need to complete an accredited Surgical Technology program at a community or four-year college, vocational school or at our Miami, Fort. Lauderdale, and Altamonte Springs Campuses. We, City College, offer the C.M. Fike Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.00 per term for students taking nine (9) credit hours or more to those students who enroll in the Surgical Technology program. The typical program length is two years, and covers courses in Biology, Anotomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Medical Terminology, Medical Law and Ethics, and more core classes. It’s also necessary to get hands-on experience in a clinical setting to prepare for working in a hospital setting, City College provides this experience and can help you advance your career as a Surgical Technologist.
After attending one of the Surgical Technologist schools and completing the program you can expect to earn a median salary of $39,920 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). Job growth is expected to increase 25 percent between 2008 and 2018, and continues to grow due to increased technology for surgical practices, due to the increase in the aging population.
